Alder Montana
Gold deposits may have dried up more than a century ago, but visitors to Alder, Montana can still experience some of the desperation and thrill of prospecting at the Red Rock Mine just south of town. The mine offers visitors the chance to screen diggings for beautiful Montana garnets and other gemstones.
At the end of the Alder Gulch, Alder has a history that stretches back to the earliest days of the Montana gold rush. In 1863, prospectors discovered gold in Alder Creek, south east of the town of Alder. By 1864, the population of the fourteen-mile long Alder Gulch had swollen to ten thousand. Alder served as the primary railroad terminus for the gulch, bringing vital supplies into the area, and shipping gold ore out.
In addition to the Red Rock Mine and easy access to Virginia City and Nevada City, Alder is also the gateway to the beautiful Ruby River Reservoir. Although less well known as a trout stream than the neighboring Madison and Beaverhead Rivers, the Ruby River and Reservoir provide secluded, intimate fishing experiences, a perfect addition to a relaxing Montana vacation.
