Mileage: Approximately 205 miles from West Yellowstone to Deer Lodge.
From Yellowstone National Park’s west entrance, take Highway 287 to Ennis for world-renowned fly fishing on the Madison River and locally-raised beefsteaks at the Longbranch Saloon and 20 Below. Then on to historic Virginia City and Nevada City for a trolley ride, participate in one of the Living History weekends, take in the Brewery Follies or the family friendly Opera House. Step back in time and stay at either the Fairweather Inn or the Nevada City Hotel and Cabins.
Continue on Highway 287 through the scenic Ruby Valley, Sheridan and Twin Bridges, turning west on Highway 41. In Butte, see the World Mining Museum, take a trolley ride, explore the historic Uptown with Old Butte Historical Adventures, visit the infamous Dumas Brothel, learn about the Chinese in the American West at the Mai Wah Museum. Spend the night with American royalty at the Copper King Mansion Bed and Breakfast. Try one of Butte’s signature dishes: pasties introduced by Cornish miners.
Take I-90 West and stop for a relaxing soak at Fairmont Hot Springs Resort. Continue on I-90 West to Deer Lodge, tour the Old Montana Prison Museum Complex: the Prison, the Montana Auto Museum, Yesterday’s Playthings, Frontier Montana, and the Powell County Museum. Re-live our past at the 1880s Grant-Kohrs Ranch National Historic Site.
Continue westward on Interstate Highway 90 West to Missoula and Glacier National Park.
