Ice Boating and Ice Yachting in Southwest Montana

An iceboat is similar in design and function to a sailboat, except that it sits on runners or skis which allow the vessel to glide over the ice (or hard water). When done on a competitive or race level, iceboating is often referred to as ice yachting.

In Southwest Montana, Canyon Ferry is the place to find iceboaters; because of the speed of the sport, large bodies of water are required. Canyon Ferry provides an ideal environment for iceboating with hard freezes, consistent winds, and large open spaces. From around late December through early April (dependent on ice conditions), iceboating enthusiasts can be found gliding over miles of ice with the snowcapped peaks of the Elkhorn and Big Belt Mountains as the backdrop.

Canyon Ferry Reservoir: 33,500 surface acres with 96 shoreline miles.
