Community Overview

When young George Beatty moved to the mining camp of Winston, Montana in the 1860s, he hoped that the fresh mountain air might add a year or two to his tuberculosis ridden lungs. So convinced was he that death was imminent he even brought his tombstone with him. The tombstone sat in his back shed for over seventy years before anyone could make any use of it. Is there something clean and health giving in the air in Winston? There may be. Just south of Helena on the shore of Canyon Ferry Reservoir, Winston exemplifies the Canyon Ferry valley wonderfully. Winston offers easy access from US Highway 287 to the boating, year-round fishing, and swimming of Canyon Ferry, and the camping, hiking, and hunting of the Elkhorn Mountains.
