Description

The trail system in the Butte area is nothing short of amazing and this ride showcases some outstanding trails. This particular loop is about 80% singletrack, with 20% being on the old Milwaukee railroad grade and a very short downhill stint on highway 2. You can come up with any number of combinations that include all or just parts of this ride. Starting from the Blacktail Ridge trail head you will ride south and uphill. At somewhere around a mile the trail will fork and you will stay right. The next intersection in about 3/4 of a mile will be with the Skeeboggan trail. Go right and downhill to highway 2. Go directly across highway 2 into an entry road for one of the areas many recreation sites. If the gate is closed that is ok, just ride around it. Just after the gate you will see a trail marker on your left for Graham Canyon. Jump on this trail for a 3/4 mile leg burner up to the Milwaukee rail road grade. Once you reach the railroad grade, turn left and follow the grade through a tunnel and across the tressel. Right before you get to highway 2 again, there will be a blocked tunnel. When you see this you will veer right just a little and that will lead you right up to highway 2. Go left down highway 2 to the start of the Beaver Ponds trail. This is well marked, you can't miss it. You will climb for a while until you reach the top and then will role along until you reach the intersection with the Blacktail Ridge trail. Turn left and follow this all the way back to the start.
