Fun fact I recently learned: We can close our eyes to shut out sight, but we can’t actually close our ears to shut out sound. Even when we are in deepest sleep, our ears are still open. I discovered this fact because this morning my cat decided that 2am was the appropriate time to practice tap dancing on the wooden floor outside my bedroom.
But it is a real fact because I also looked it up. And my point is that sound is amazing. I mean think about it, how does the fact that my cat was tapping her claws against the floor travel to my ears and wake me up out of a dead sleep? If only there were a fun, interactive way I could re-learn the physics I definitely acted like I understood in high school…
Thankfully, there is! For more than a decade, ExplorationWorks in the Great Northern *AREA* of Helena has been teaching kids (and adults) all sorts of science through exciting, interactive exhibits and classes. And guess what’s on now … SoundScience. Boom (that’s a sound), problem solved.
Sound Science explores the science of all things sound. Watch sound waves in motion, strum an electric guitar, listen to the soundscape, and learn all about ears, voice, and music. There’s a ‘Groovy Science’ Program for pre-schoolers (Thursdays 2:00-2:30), and SoundLab—featuring local musicians and their instruments (Sundays 2:00-3:00).
The programs and classes are for kids. I mean *technically* the whole thing is designed for kids. But that’s never stopped me from learning a lot and having a blast every time I visit. ExplorationWorks is sneaky like that. Kids think they’re there to play and adults think they’re there to babysit the kids, but actually everyone is there to be scientists.
