Set on the meandering banks of the Big Hole River, Wisdom is exactly what people imagine when they think of small-town Montana. Surrounded by mountains, the town is a haven for hikers and campers as well as the many anglers who are lured by the blue-ribbon fishing of the Big Hole Valley. Halfway between Wisdom and the Continental Divide is the Big Hole National Battlefield, an important site along the Nez Perce trail.
How to Access the Continental Divide Trail From Wisdom
Wisdom is about 25 miles from the CDT down Highway 43. There are excellent hiking options of all levels around Chief Joseph Pass, on the Montana/Idaho border. This section of the trail is in the Wisdom District of the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National forest, and the Wisdom Ranger Station is an important point of contact.
