View Interactive MapAs a Gateway Community to the Continental Divide Trail, Helena provides hikers with easy access, re-supply options and cozy accommodations. Access to the trail can be found west of Helena at MacDonald Pass or to the northwest as you head toward Lincoln at Stemple and Flesher passes. With five nearby access points or trailheads, Helena offers the opportunity for a number of day or weekend hikes.
Helena, like many of the communities in Southwest Montana had its start as a gold camp. The Four Georgians gave it one last chance before heading out of the area and struck it rich. It was this discovery that led to an influx of business and infrastructure allowing Helena to thrive past the mining days. Visitors to Helena will find a rich history amid a vibrant town to explore.
Helena's Walking Mall is home to a number of shops and restaurants to explore and if you visit during the summer, you might see the Helena Tour Train providing tours of the historic community. The Montana History Foundation also provides walking tours of the downtown area. Some of the most popular events throughout the year include the Last Chance Stampede & Rodeo, Symphony Under the Stars and the Montana Brewers Rendevouz.
How to Access the Continental Divide Trail From Helena
The Continental Divide Trail Coalition has designated 4 communities in Montana (all of which are located in Southwest Montana) as official CDT Gateway Communities. These communities are friendly to trail users and are dedicated to the completion and protection of the trail. The communities we have listed as accessible have connecting trails from the community to the CDT itself. These connecting trails are also popular day hikes for Montana visitors!

Helena to MacDonald Pass
From Helena, Montana, travel west on US Highway 12 for 16 miles to MacDonald Pass; there is a trailhead to the south that provides access to the Continental Divide Trail.
Helena to Priest Pass
From Helena, travel west on US Highway 12. Turn right onto the Priest Pass Road and travel approximately 6 miles to the top of the pass.
Helena to Flesher Pass
From Helena, Montana, travel north to Lincoln Road (Highway 279) and continue west for 28 miles. You'll find signage and a trailhead on the left side of the highway. Many hikers make the trek between Flesher and Rogers passes.

The walking mall is the heart of downtown and features a number of boutiques, coffee shops, art galleries and restaurants. For the history buffs, explore the mansion district, take a tour of the Capitol Building, hop aboard the Last Chance Tour Train, or make a trek out to Gates of the Mountains. There's no end to the outdoor recreation available in the area!
