The Lovin' Spoonful at the Mother Lode Theatre

The Lovin’ Spoonful were America’s answer to the Beatles! Led by John Sebastian, Steve Boone, Joe Butler and Zal Yanovsky, the band burst onto the music scene in 1965, sending their first seven singles into the Billboard Top 10 in rapid succession.

Formed in New York City’s Greenwich Village at the Night Owl Café, the Spoonful signed with Kama Sutra Records and quickly became one of the biggest acts of the ’60s. They captivated audiences on every major television variety show of the era, including The Ed Sullivan Show, Hullabaloo and Shindig.

Their breakthrough hit, “Do You Believe in Magic,” launched an extraordinary run of classics, including “Daydream,” “Younger Girl,” “Summer in the City,” “You Didn’t Have to Be So Nice,” “Darling Be Home Soon,” “Did You Ever Have to Make Up Your Mind,” “Nashville Cats,” “Coconut Grove” and “She’s Still a Mystery (to Me),” among many others.

The Lovin’ Spoonful’s unique blend of folk, rock, pop and jug-band influences made them true musical innovators. Their impact reached some of music’s greatest legends, with Paul McCartney and Brian Wilson among those who cited the band as an inspiration. John Lennon famously called them “tunesmiths.”

Today, the Lovin’ Spoonful continues to tour with Jeff Alan Ross, Bill Cinque, Rob Bonfiglio and Mike Auturi, bringing the group’s timeless catalog and unmistakable good-time spirit to audiences everywhere.

Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2000, the Lovin’ Spoonful remain one of the most beloved and influential groups of the 1960s.
