The nearby town of Basin began as a mining camp in the late 1800s. Gold was discovered in the area in 1862, and soon after Cataract and Basin Creeks were lined with placer mining, staked claims and miners' cabins. By 1880, the settlement at Basin had become the local source of supplies for the miners in the area. Later boasting a smelter and a mill, the town thrived at the turn of the twentieth century. Today, many of the historic buildings remain and house a bar, restaurants and a few specialty shops.
