Copper King Mansion

Some buildings tell their story from the sidewalk. The Copper King Mansion in Butte, Montana, practically shouts it. Complete with all red brick, steep rooflines, and ornate trim, it looks like something out of a history book. But once you step inside, under the hand-carved woodwork, frescoed ceilings, and creaking century-old floors, suddenly you’re in the middle of Montana’s copper boom.

Step Inside Butte’s Gilded Age

Built between 1884 and 1888 for copper tycoon William A. Clark, this 34-room Victorian home is as over-the-top inside as it is on the outside. Inside, you’ll find parquet hardwood floors, Tiffany stained glass, frescoed ceilings, and giant fireplaces in every direction. The ballroom, library, chapel, and bedrooms are all furnished with period-accurate antiques. All of this makes it easy to imagine Butte in its boomtown days, alive with miners, railroad men, and prospectors chasing the next big claim.
