A Unique High Tea Experience at Montana’s Tizer Gardens
When someone mentions the opportunity to enjoy a high tea on vacation, I imagine one might conjure images of a small courtyard in England or maybe even the ornate and luxurious Brown Palace in Denver. It would surprise me if a small town with a population of only 480 would be the first thing you pictured. And yet, tucked away in Montana’s Elkhorn Mountains just outside of Helena, resides a small but stunning venue in Jefferson City, Montana that has been offering high tea in the gardens for nearly 25 years. Tizer Botanic Gardens & Arboretum may be small, but it offers an incredible experience for travelers of all ages!
The moment you step into Tizer Gardens, you are enveloped in a magical atmosphere. It’s quiet and peaceful, yet there’s a delightful buzz among friends as you wander deeper into the property. Whether you are visiting for one of only two high teas offered each summer, or simply spending the afternoon at Jefferson City’s small oasis, there is so much to see!
The gardens were established in 1997 and have become a favorite destination for Montana residents and visitors alike! This is Montana’s only Botanic Garden and Arboretum, making it a truly one-of-a-kind experience. What started as a single acre, has since grown into a seven-acre oasis featuring 14 gardens and a nursery.
Did You Know!?!
Tizer Gardens is an accredited Level II Arboretum as of 2018. The large majority of botanical gardens and arboreta are owned and operated by a university or government entity. In fact, Tizer Gardens & Arboretum is one of only three privately owned arboreta in the world (international accreditation program). Learn more about their accreditation and qualifications.
As you wander through the various gardens, you’ll see people making the most of their visit; some sharing a picnic, others strolling the paths, children playing in the gardens, and others reading, writing, or painting. If exploring the gardens for a couple of hours isn’t enough, they have a VRBO on site where you can spend the night along Prickly Pear Creek!
Spend the Night at Tizer Gardens
The property features two small cabins. The first, the Iona Cabin is 140 years old, having been lovingly restored to its current rustic state. The second cabin (the 7/11) is much smaller, quite literally fitting only a double bed. Staying on site is a unique experience – once the gates are closed to the public, you’ll have the gardens to yourself. Enjoy a fire under the big sky and maybe even take your breakfast in the main garden’s Gazebo! It’s a rustic experience, but the lack of WIFI and cell service provides a chance to set aside the hustle and bustle of everyday life and recharge as you connect with nature.
Ready to book a little vacation, check out Tizer Gardens on VRBO.
High Tea in the Gardens
If your visit happens to align with one of their “High Tea in the Garden” events, we can’t recommend the experience enough! It is a true delight. We had the chance to attend the July tea and cannot wait to return next summer. Among the selection of finger sandwiches, scones, and desserts provided by The Sweet Spot bakery in Boulder, MT, the scones and lemon mint tea stood out as favorite. Each bite and sip seemed to capture the essence of a perfect afternoon tea, and with the stunning backdrop of Montana’s natural beauty – the experience cannot be matched.
One of the most special aspects of this event are the personal touches added by owner Belva Lotzer. Not only does Belva host the event, but she provides a personal guided tour following the tea. On the tour you’ll learn about the history of the gardens, the incredible variety of flora, the current test gardens, and hidden gems (that you might otherwise miss, for example the ‘living tool shed’) will be pointed out. It’s these unique touches that make the high tea at Tizer Gardens more than just a stop on the highway, but a memorable experience.
Tea may only be offered twice a year, but you won’t regret adding a trip to the gardens to any Montana adventure! So next time you find yourself near Helena, Montana, don’t miss the chance to stroll through this little slice of paradise. It’s an intimate, magical experience that will leave you with a newfound love for Montana’s hidden treasures.
