Butte, Montana began as a collection of small mining claims and evolved into one of the nations most prosperous mining centers during the early 1900s. Known for more than a century as The Richest Hill on Earth, Butte earned its reputation from the vast deposits of valuable ore beneath its surface. Today, the city continues to evolve with a diversified economy that includes energy research, education, healthcare, transportation, tourism, and environmental technology.
For those interested in Montanas mining heritage, Butte offers a wealth of historical attractions. Visitors can explore The Mineral Museum on the Montana Tech campus, learn about the areas mining legacy at the Berkeley Pit Visitor Center, and tour the citys historic districts. Additional highlights include the beautifully preserved Copper King Mansion and one of the largest National Historic Landmark Districts in the United States.
The Butte Chamber Visitor Information Center serves as a central resource for travel information throughout Montana. Trolley tours depart directly from the center, and a scenic walking trail begins just outside its doors.
Surrounded by spectacular mountain landscapes, Butte provides year-round outdoor recreation opportunities. In the warmer months, visitors can enjoy fishing, hiking, climbing, mountain biking, and camping. During winter, Butte serves as an ideal base for nearby ski resorts, snowmobiling, and cross-country skiing. Neighboring communities located just a short drive away offer even more attractions and experiences.
Conveniently located at the crossroads of Interstates 15 and 90, Butte is well positioned to meet a variety of transportation needs. Regular bus service is available through Greyhound and Rimrock Trailways, while Bert Mooney Airport provides convenient access for air travelers.
We hope you enjoy your stay in Butte and encourage you to return again and share your experience with friends and family.
