Maverick Mountain

Small-Town Charm Meets Big Adventure

by Kilynn Groen – University of Montana Honors College Student

Located in the Grasshopper Valley near Polaris, Montana just off of the Pioneer Mountain Scenic Byway, Maverick Mountain is a hidden gem that combines a welcoming, small-town atmosphere with boundless recreation opportunities. This family-friendly ski area offers an authentic Montana experience.

Maverick Mountain opened in 1946, built on the spirit of community and a love for winter recreation. The area was developed as a local ski hill for the Grasshopper Valley. Skiers had use of a single rope tow. Over the decades, Maverick has retained its laid-back charm but has begun to gradually expand its facilities. Today there are 24 trails with an even mix of beginner, intermediate and expert terrain. Views from it its upper reaches look out on the many mountain ranges of southwest Montana.

In 2015, Maverick was purchased by Erik and Kristi Borge who brought their passion for outdoor recreation and community to the ski area. With a focus on maintaining an authentic Montana atmosphere, the couple have worked to enhance the mountain’s appeal while staying true to its roots. Under their stewardship, the ski area continues to be a hub for locals and visitors seeking affordable fun. And they are hands on owners participating in all aspects of making the place work.

Maverick’s terrain is compact, but it has something for every ability. Beginners can enjoy the gentle lower slopes, while intermediate and advanced skiers will find more challenging runs at the top of the mountain, with up to 2,020 vertical feet of drop. And accessibility and affordability are hallmarks of this southwest Montana treasure. Lift tickets are a fraction of the cost compared to larger resorts.

In addition to alpine skiing, Maverick offers snowshoeing, backcountry skiing, and cross-country trails in the nearby area, making it a hub for all types of winter adventure.

After a day on the slopes, visitors can warm up at the base lodge, where a crackling fire and homemade food await them. The lodge serves as a gathering place for locals and travelers, fostering a sense of community that larger resorts often lack.

While there is no on-mountain lodging, nearby accommodations in Polaris and Dillon provide plenty of options. Many visitors stay at the well-known Elkhorn Hot Springs Resort, which is only minutes away from the mountain. It offers natural geothermal pools that are the perfect way to soothe sore muscles after a day of skiing. Other local lodging in the valley includes the Grasshopper Inn and rustic cabins. Erik and Kristi also own the hot springs.

Maverick Mountain’s location is steeped in history. In 1862 Grasshopper Valley witnessed Montana’s first gold rush. which led to the creation of Bannack, Montana’s initial territorial capital. Today, the Bannack State Park ghost town is just a short drive from the ski area, offering visitors a chance to step back in time and explore Montana’s early mining history.

Whether you’re carving turns on the slopes, soaking in the hot springs, or wandering through Bannack, Maverick Mountain offers a true Montana experience that blends recreation, history, and community.
